Flood Working Group
The idyllic setting of Easterton, along a valley in the centre of Salisbury Plain, comes with a very special challenge. The flow of water that feeds the picturesque chalk streams flowing into the Avon, requires managing, in order to protect against occasional increases in volume and the risk of flooding. The Easterton Flood Working Group was set up, comprising volunteer residents of the village, with the remit of assisting the Easterton Parish Council in developing measures to prevent flooding within the Parish and planning to cope in the eventuality of a flood.
The main foci of the Group are:
- Assessing the water flow into the Parish and making recommendations to slow this down during peak times.
- Assessing the water flow through the Parish, primarily along the Brook and out, to the south and make recommendations to the PC:
- General maintenance, to be carried out by parishioners on a ‘self help’ basis.
- Remedial clearance work, requiring industrial equipment.
- Capital works.
- Managing the Emergency Plan, on behalf of the Parish Council, to pre-empt the extreme situations, when reactive measures are needed.
An Easterton Parish Councillor, Cllr P Bullock, works with the FWG and attends Wiltshire Council flood discussion groups.
